In China's animal breeding reproductive genetics artificial insemination laboratories, scientists are using artificial intelligence to “design” the next generation of pigs and cattle. At the recently held 2025 World Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Conference, multiple cutting-edge technologies were showcased, including AI breeding platforms, multi-gene editing disease-resistant breeding techniques, and bovine haploid stem cell breeding technology. Among these, the world's first “five-gene-edited pig” and the world's first “haploid stem cell gene-edited cow” attracted widespread attention.

In the past, breeding experts relied on experience to select the best cattle and sheep—assessing physique and comparing yields. Today, they simply sit at computers, using AI models to analyze hundreds of millions of genetic data points to predict which gene combinations will yield healthier, higher-yielding animals.

“AI not only assists in selection but also helps create novel genetic combinations,” explained researchers from ShouNong Food Group. Using their proprietary multi-gene editing technology, they successfully bred the world's first pig carrying five disease-resistant genes simultaneously. This breakthrough promises livestock that are stronger, more energy-efficient, and more environmentally sustainable.

Artificial intelligence is transforming “experience-based breeding” into “intelligent design,” not only shortening breeding cycles but also bolstering China's food security. To further advance AI integration in breeding, the “AI+Livestock Breeding Collaborative Innovation Platform” was officially launched at the conference, bringing together universities, research institutions, and enterprises to jointly build an intelligent “genetic brain.”

Experts note that intelligent breeding represents not only a technological breakthrough but also embodies the concept of “green development.” Making agriculture more efficient, animals healthier, and fostering greater harmony between humanity and nature is the future direction of agriculture.

With the help of data and algorithms, breeding is no longer merely the inheritance of experience on the farm—it is a new path toward a sustainable future.
